Adobe Authorware

The authoring language Authorware, previously known as Course of Action, and latterly also known as Authorware Professional, or Authorware Attain, was first developed in 1990 as a means of enabling individuals without interest of proficiency in traditional programming, to create multi-media courseware quickly.

According to Michael Allen, the designer of Authorware, the language originated from studying how people created instructional material for the PLATO system, and from considering what programming background they had. In consequence, an iconic-based interface was developed, that required a minimum of learning by the author before he or she was able to create interactive courseware.

For complex animations and greater interactivity, Director 4 content can be embedded in Authorware. Authorware-generated courseware can send messages to Director 'movies' through Lingo scripting with the TellLingo icon.

Beyond Director, 16-bit AIFF audio and RTF text can now be embedded along with QuickTime 2.x movies, HyperCard XCMDs and XCFNs, and PICT images. Applications created with Authorware 3 compute graphs and calculate loops faster than ever.

To the Internet, PowerPC, and beyond
3.5 extends Authorware further with Shockwave support through a downloadable Afterburner app, brand new PowerPC-native authoring tools and runtime, and a plug-in API based on Xtras for Director 5.

CD-ROM goodies
The included CD-ROM includes more than 1,000 pieces of clip-art and multiple tiny sample projects, demos, and a completely rewritten help system.
